Fauna Club Members Had Fun Bird Watching in P-WEC

Students from various Senior High Schools (SMA) in East Java: SMAN 5 Malang, SMAN 9 Malang, SMAN 10 Malang, SMAN 2 Batu, MAN 3 Malang, SMA Shalahuddin Malang, SMA Kertanegara Malang, and SMA Darul Qur’an Singosari; who join Fauna Club, a club for the students to learn about wildlife and nature conservation facilitated by P-WEC, gathered in the center last 20 February 2010. They met for the quarter meeting to share their experiences and activities to other clubs’ members.
Besides sharing ideas, 80 students that were accompanied by their advisor teachers, also learned and practiced out bird watching in P-WEC. They paid attentively to P-WEC facilitators who explained the bird watching materials. The students were enthusiastic to find out the fact that Indonesia had more than 1,500 bird species instead of dozens as what they had known before.
Practicing out the bird watching, Fauna club members got more excited to watch the birds on the trees in P-WEC. They tried to identify the birds as best they could. Some were seriously squatting near the bushes and watching the birds they found, while others stood under the big trees that could be found almost anywhere in P-WEC areas.
Even though the bird watching was not intended for scientific purpose and more for fun instead, the students who were the tenth and eleventh grades, learned how to be professional bird watchers. Among the 80 bird species distributed in P-WEC areas, they recorded some beautiful birds like: the Yellow vented bulbul (Pycnonotus goiavier), the Oriental White-eye (Zosterops palpebrosus), the Cave swiftlet (Collocalia linchi), etc.
