Profauna Sea Turtle Educational Campaign In Kuta Bali

Education plays a major role in ProFauna Indonesia’s main activities besides wildlife campaigning, investigation and rescue. One cannot under estimate the importance of education in engaging people to raise their awareness in protecting wildlife. For that reason ProFauna does school visit, from primary schools to universities.

ProFauna Bali, which coordinates the sea turtle campaign, also conducts school visits. On 7th and 12th April 2008, ProFauna Bali’s coordinator and members, visited a primary and secondary schools near Kuta beach Bali. About 170 primary school students and 60 secondary school students watched ProFauna’s film “Toward Extinction” and a film about sea turtle protection by IOSEA (the Indian Ocean – South-East Asian Marine Turtle MoU).

During the school visit an important message was delivered, “Don’t throw plastic litters”. I Wayan Wiradnyana, ProFauna Bali coordinator, told the students who live near Kuta beach where ProFauna runs the sea turtle nests protection program in collaboration with the government forestry department and the local lifeguards (many of them are parents of the students), “Sea turtles eat plastic litters because they confuse them with jellyfish.” Good cooperation between NGO, government, local people and their children is needed to protect the sea turtles.
