P-WEC encourages the village children to love reading
Petungsewu Wildlife Education Centre (P-WEC) not only runs education programmes on wildlife conservation but also the awareness and community development programmes for the locals who live near the centre. P-WEC is located in the foothills of Kawi Mountain and surrounded by some villages that border the forests. The villages are Petungsewu, Kucur, and Selorejo that most of the people make a living from the forest, farming and mowing grasses for their livestock.
P-WEC has done some community development by employing the locals to work at P-WEC and the Petungsewu Animal Rescue Centre which is next to P-WEC centre. P-WEC is also running the people awareness programmes on the wildlife conservation by screening some conservation movies at the nearby villages.
P-WEC staffs help the nearby schools by becoming volunteer teachers. The schools are lack of teachers because of their remote locations. Therefore, P-WEC staffs, in turn, are teaching voluntarily at the schools.
The latest community development programme is the ‘mobile library’. The ‘mobile library’ is hoped to encourage the village children to love reading. Held on Sunday, P-WEC team goes around the nearby villages with a wagon containing many children books.
The ‘mobile library’ is welcomed by the poor children who are lacks of books. Their parents can not afford them books. Thus, the ‘mobile library’ gives them chances to gain information for free. P-WEC staffs attentively read some of the children wildlife stories.
