Last 31st July 2010, ProFauna’s education center which is entitled Petungsewu Wildlife Education Center (P-WEC) held a workshop of Waste Recycling for Eco-friendly artworks. It was attended more than 200 students from around Malang Great Region. The youth of the villages surrounding the center which is located in the foothills of Kawi Mountain also attended the annual event.

As key speakers were some dedicated artists in East Java Province. Bambang Hariaji, an artist from Surabaya City which was one of them explained to the workshop participants that they could make art works or handicrafts from the nature as it provided so many resources as the art media and materials that were eco-friendly. Karjo, another speaker who taught the participants about handicraft creation from plastic and organic wastes, agreed with Hariaji.

Djumangin, the speaker of plane toy creation from used cans from Surabaya City added that to be creative did not need a lot of money to add some artistic or economic values to a material. Likewise, Djumangin, the speaker of handicraft making from coconut shells, added that to make artworks did not need rare or expensive material. One of the participants proved him right by buying his bag and wildlife lamp.

P-WEC held the workshop as the center wants to educate the public that recycling is one of the solutions to reduce waste and rubbish which factually increases as the population grows. In 2009, Indonesia produced 11.330 tons of rubbish per day. In the instant world today, the figure will add up. The bad thing is that some rubbish are non-biodegradable which take more rooms and cause more problems like pollution because in Indonesia there is rarely good waste and rubbish management.

By attending the workshop, participants are hoped to cultivate and recycle their own rubbish and waste in order to add artistic and also economic values to them.
